For the last couple of years, I have been finding holes in the front yard. Lots of them.
Crocs are for scale. I don’t care if you make fun of them. They are comfortable. You should get a pair.
The evidence
- I could tell they were from digging as opposed to “living”. They were not tunnels. They go down about 6 inches at an angle. Dirt is kicked up around the hole.
- The holes don’t appear every night. They show up either weekly or monthly.
- There could be just 2-3 holes or as many as 15-20 holes in the yard. I wondered if it was one creature or several.
- We are in an urban neighborhood with no near-by woods.
I am not bothered by holes in my yard. They aren’t big enough to break an ankle and I don’t care about “yard of the month”. If the grass is mowed, I’m happy. I also don’t care about all the duck poop in my yard, but that’s another story.
But, I am curious by nature and the case of the mysterious holes needed to be solved. I couldn’t stand it any more, and finally bought a trail cam.
The solution
In just a couple of evenings of figuring out the web cam, the mystery was solved…
Apparently raccoons are living their best life while digging for white grubs (often June beetles) in their yard. I knew they would come by for cat food, but no idea they would dig up your lawn.
Mystery solved!
