When did you most recently give your car a little TLC? Now instead, let’s think about your website. When was the last time you had an online “tune-up,” an evaluation, or checked to make sure everything’s running smoothly? If you can’t remember, it might be time for an upgrade or at least a visit from your web “mechanic.”
Here are some telltale signs that your website needs some TLC.
It Looks Outdated
- Are your employee photos sporting mullets or beehives? If your website still looks like it belongs in 2015 (or worse, 2005), it’s probably turning potential customers, who want to know that you’re keeping up with the times and tech, away.
- Outdated fonts, colors, layouts, or stock photos can make your business seem behind your competition.
Solution: A modern, clean design builds credibility and trust. And it will function much better.
It’s Not Mobile-Friendly
- Most likely over 60% of your web traffic comes from mobile devices.
- If users are required to pinch, zoom, or scroll awkwardly to view your website, they will get frustrated and leave for the closest competitor.
Solution: Your website should be fully responsive and look great on all screen sizes, phones, and devices.
Your Site is Slow
- If it takes more than a few seconds to load, you’re losing visitors.
- Google ranks slow sites lower in search results. This is super-important to your business. You may want to read this one again.
- How does your site load for your target audience? If you are targeting corporations with high-speed internet, your benchmark will be different than targeting people who do most of their browsing with their phones.
Solution: Check your site’s speed and adjust accordingly. Lots of problems can be fixed with caching software. But sometimes problems (like coding or image types) need to be fixed under the hood.
Your Bounce Rate Is High
- A high bounce rate means people visit your website but leave without interacting.
- This might happen because of bad design, slow loading, or unclear messaging.
Solution: Improve site speed, clarity, and navigation to keep visitors engaged.
It’s Hard to Navigate
- If people can’t find what they’re looking for in a few clicks, they’ll get frustrated and leave.
- A confusing menu or cluttered layout is a big conversion killer.
- You want as many people to access your content as possible. Bad fonts, colors, images, and coding can prevent this. And, if people can’t navigate your website easily, the search engines probably can’t either.
Solution: Keep navigation simple, intuitive, and focused on user needs.
You Aren’t Generating Leads or Sales
- A business website should be converting visitors into customers.
- If your forms, calls-to-action (CTAs), or checkout process aren’t working up to their potential, you may be leaving money on the table.
Solution: Optimize CTAs, simplify forms, and make it easy for visitors to take action.
You’ve Rebranded (But Your Website Hasn’t)
- If your business has changed its look, services, or messaging, but your website is stuck in the past, it creates confusion.
Solution: Your website should match your current brand identity.
It’s a Nightmare to Update
- If making simple changes require you to call the developer every time, it’s time for an upgrade.
- In a modern website, most of the simple stuff should be easy to update without any coding knowledge.
Solution: A redesign with a user-friendly Content Management Solution (CMS, like WordPress) can make content updates simple.
You Cringe When Sharing It
- If you hesitate before sending someone a link to your website, that’s a big red flag.
Solution: A website you’re proud to share builds confidence in your business.
