Privacy Policy

The short version: I don't share things that aren't mine to share. I protect your data.

I'm one person — not a company with a data department — and this page explains exactly what happens to your information when you contact me, hire me, or just read something on this site. No lawyers were harmed in the making of it.

If you work with me

  • I will never share or sell your email address or any other information without your consent, or do anything else that would help someone spam you.
  • My mailing list is mine alone. I use it to send things I think are useful to clients and business associates. You can unsubscribe from any email using the link at the bottom of it, and I won't take it personally.
  • I keep emails. They live in my address book on my own devices, which are secured when I'm not using them.
  • I handle credentials carefully. Passwords you share with me go into an encrypted password manager. When credentials arrive inside a document, that document is kept with your other files on password-protected, encrypted systems rather than left loose.
  • Your files are stored on password-protected, GDPR-compliant systems.
  • Invoicing runs through a third-party system that is GDPR compliant. I don't store your credit card or bank details myself — the payment processor handles that, and I never see the full numbers.
  • This site uses a security certificate (SSL). Anything you send through the contact form is encrypted on its way to me.
  • Email is a different story. Mail between servers is usually encrypted these days, but email isn't private end to end and I can't control what happens on your side of it. If you need to send me something genuinely sensitive — a password, an account number — ask first and I'll give you a better way to do it.

What this website collects

Analytics. I use Google Analytics to count visits — how many people came, which pages they looked at, and roughly where they found me. I look at this maybe once a month to see whether anyone's reading the blog. I don't run ads anywhere, and my analytics account isn't connected to any advertising platform.

Contact form. What you write comes to my email, and it isn't shared with anyone. You're not added to my mailing list unless you tick the box asking to be.

Newsletter. If you sign up yourself, you'll get a confirmation email first, so nobody can sign you up as a prank. If you've hired me, I may add you directly — you're someone I've worked with, and I'd rather you hear about things that affect your site than not. Either way, the unsubscribe link is at the bottom of every email, I make it easy to find, and I won't take it personally.

I store your name (optional) and email address. My newsletter software also tells me whether an email was opened and which links were clicked — I use that to know whether what I'm sending is worth reading. Unsubscribing stops all of it.

Blog comments. If you leave a comment, WordPress stores your name, email address, and IP address along with it. The name and comment are public; the email and IP are not. The IP is kept because it's the only real defense against spam.

Server logs. Like every website, mine records basic technical information — browser type, operating system, referring page, date and time, IP address. It's used to keep the site running and to investigate problems.

Cookies

This site sets three, and here's the complete list:

  • WordPress — a session cookie, and only if you log in, which almost nobody does
  • Google Analytics — counts you as one visitor rather than several
  • Cloudflare — a security cookie that helps tell real visitors from bots

That's it. Three cookies, none of them following you anywhere else on the internet.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time, and nothing here will break if you do. If you'd like to opt out of Google Analytics on every site you visit, Google publishes a browser add-on that does exactly that: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout

What I don't do

  • I don't run advertising on this site.
  • I don't sell your personal information, and I don't share it for advertising purposes. I never have.
  • I don't track you across other websites, and I have no way of doing so.
  • I don't profile you or make decisions about you with software. My contact form does run a spam filter, so a submission that looks like a bot may get stopped before it reaches me. If you're a real person and I never wrote back, that's worth a phone call — it's happened.

I have opinions about this, if you want them. I once went looking for a burrito and got emailed by name ninety seconds later by a restaurant that closed twenty years ago. I wrote about what that site was doing and how it works — it's the reason this page is as short as it is.

Your choices

You can ask me at any time to tell you what information I have about you, correct it, or delete it. Email or call and I'll take care of it. There's no form and no process — it's just me.

If you're in the EU or UK, you have these rights formally under GDPR. I'm a one-person business in Florida and I'm not marketing to Europe, but if you've landed here and want your data gone, ask and it's gone. Same answer either way.

Services I rely on

Two of these put a cookie in your browser, so they're named:

  • Google Analytics — visitor counts
  • Cloudflare — security and site speed

These only touch my end of things, so I'll describe rather than name them:

  • An email service provider — for my mailing list
  • A web host — where this site lives
  • An invoicing and payment platform — for billing clients

Each has its own privacy policy. I've chosen services that don't require me to hand over anything I wouldn't want handed over about myself.
