Free Photoshop Alternative? Yep. It's called SumoPaint.

Sometimes people need a photo editing program with the major features of Photoshop, but for a small project that doesn’t really justify the expense. You could pay someone else who already has the software and equipment, but two or more of those, and you’ve spent just as much as you would have on buying your own application. Still, you need the work done, so what to do? Enter Sumo Paint.

Sumo Paint is a browser-based Photoshop clone…practically. It seems to have all the common tools for editing and cropping images as well as more advanced features like special effects filters, drawing tools, cloning, blur, dodge, smudge, etc.. If you have experience with Photoshop, you’ll have an instant comfort level with Sumo. The tools and menus boast similar location and layout.

Open and edit your own images or create new images, then save your files to your computer or send them by email. Also, there is a load of documentation.

The only downside I see is that everything is done in 72 dpi – which is great for images posted on monitors or websites — not for printing. If you need a high resolution image, you’ll need to know how many pixels to make it.

Sumo Paint has a few options for use.

  • Option 1, FREE: Just travel to their website and start using it. Simple. Easy. Gotta love that.
  • Option 2, PRO: Costs $23. It will allow you to download the program to your computer (Mac, Windows, and Linux) and it doesn’t require an internet connection. It also comes with extra filters, brushes, shapes, unlimited layers, automated updates, and a few other googies.
  • IPAD: For $1.99 you can get all the same photo editing goodness on your iPad.

For anyone that is doing a lot of complex photo editing, Sumo is probably be going to be a little light in the options and filters area. It’s not going to replace a professional grade editing program. But, if you are an occasional or hobby user, there is a good chance this will exceed your expectations.

Start Playing with SumoPaint by going to their website now.
